Cartography

Today I arrived at Fujikawaguchiko, a small town around Lake Kawaguchiko with a direct view to Mount Fuji. There’s a solemn majesty to the view of Fuji-san from the lake - when it is not covered by clouds, the blue tint from all the air inbetween adds a distinct perception that it is much farther away than the hills that surround the lake, but as it stands tall even compared to those same hills, a sudden feeling of reverence washed over me when I saw it.

This afternoon it was only possible to see the base and the very tip of Fuji-san. There were moments where the currently strong winds carried some of the clouds away, but the middle reaches of the mountain still remained obscured.

The sketch from Carlos that this scene drew me most to is a sketch where there is a simulation of gradient walking on a procedural noise domain. Carlos’s sketch has thick, but dilluted lines, and a normal cartographic map with topology representation has thin lines denoting the elevations – therefore I changed these parameters in the code, in my remix, to denote the discovery of the topology of an unknown world when the user interacts with the empty canvas.
